To improve VHF radio coverage within Noumea, The ARANC Hamradio VHF/2m repeater FK8ZHB-R, was installed in 2001. It's conveniently well located inside an old bunker, so called "Sémaphore", built in the years 1870-1871, it overlooks the city of Noumea and its surroundings, "Vallee du Tir", "Vallee du Genie" and "Vallee des Colons" places.
The Semaphore bunker belongs to DITTT (Direction des Infrastructures de la Topographie et des Travaux Terrestres ), inside, there are a few small radio transmitters, geodesic measurement devices and GPS terminal, and of course, power supplies that go with it.
On the roof of this building, there are no less than a dozen radio antennas of all sizes and different frequencies. But also, and more importantly, for what it was built, the heading light to Noumea Port entrance.
Indeed, a flashing light mounted on the roof, allows navigators to reach, without mishap, the Great Bay of Noumea Harbor.
